India bought 14 lakh electric two-wheelers last year — a record, and 57% of every EV sold
India registered 14,01,663 electric two-wheelers in the financial year ending March 2026 — the highest the country has recorded, and 22% more than the 11,50,780 of the year before. Against a total EV market of 2.45 million vehicles, two-wheelers made up 57% of everything electric sold.
One in fifteen new two-wheelers is now electric
The share is still small against the whole market — 6.54% of the 2.14 crore two-wheelers sold in the year, against 6.09% the year before. Read the other way, that is fifteen buyers in every hundred-and-fifty choosing electric, in a market where five years ago the number rounded to zero.
The order at the top changed
TVS led with 3,41,471 units, up 44%, followed by Bajaj at 2,89,323 (up 25%) and Ather at 2,39,124 (up 82%). Hero's Vida grew fastest of the five, up 196% to 1,44,313. Ola, which led the segment a year earlier, fell 52% to 1,64,294.
What it means if you are buying
A market growing this fast is a market where service networks, spare parts and resale all get easier every year — which are the things that actually decide whether an electric scooter is a good purchase, rather than the specification sheet. It is also a market with more choice than it has ever had, and worth taking a test ride or two before deciding.
